We invite you to an engaging guided tour dedicated to the Jewish heritage of Bratislava, offering insight into lesser-known yet highly significant chapters of the city’s history. During the tour, you will explore the history of the Jewish community—from medieval settlement in the inner town, through life in the area below the castle, to the early modern period and the memory of the Holocaust. Together, we will discover the sites of former synagogues, a mikveh, and memorials, and see how Jewish presence has shaped Bratislava over the centuries.
The tour will take us to specific locations in the Old Town, where each stop reveals a chapter of Jewish history. You will learn about the medievalJewish quarters, the expulsion of Jews after 1526, the later resettlement on the castle hill and the Jewish ghetto, as well as religious life, education, the social and legal status of Jews, and the tragic events of the 20th century.
We will pass through the area of the medieval Jewish quarters and explore when, where, and under what circumstances everyday religious and communal life took place there. We will also recall the historic mikveh and explain its significance in Judaism.
Further stops will focus on the early modern Jewish community below the castle, established at the end of the 16th century. At the site of the former Orthodox synagogue, we will discuss the importance of Rabbi Chatam Sofer and the Orthodox tradition in Bratislava, and why his memorial has become one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Orthodox Jews. We will dedicate time to notable figures of Jewish Bratislava and explain the meaning of Stolpersteine.
The tour will conclude at the site where the Neolog synagogue once stood and at the Holocaust memorial. Here we will explore the origins and significance of the Neolog movement within Judaism before recalling the events of the Holocaust and their tragic impact on the Jewish community in Bratislava. We will discuss both the causes and consequences of the Holocaust, as well as the renewal of Jewish life in the decades that followed.
